BYD asking for 97,000 EVs back from the market for fear of fire, what is the situation in Nepal ?

Kathmandu. China’s electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is recalling about 97,000 vehicles due to the possibility of fire. International media reported that BYD is going to recall 96,714 Dolphin and Yuan Plus model EVs from Monday (September 30).According to the statement issued by the ‘State Administration for Market Regulation’ (SAMR), which regulates the Chinese market, BYD will demand the return of vehicles in two groups.

Under this, BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd. will recall 87,762 dolphins made between February 4, 2023 and December 26, 2023, while BYD Auto Co. Limited will ask for the refund of eight thousand 952 yuan plus made between November 2, 2022 and June 19, 2023.A problem has been observed in the manufacturing process of the electric power steering controller of these vehicles, due to which small cracks may appear in the capacitor. It is said that there is a possibility of increasing the risk of short circuit and fire while driving.

BYD will fix the problem by installing insulation gaskets on the recalled vehicles free of charge. Under this, if any problem is found at the service center, it will be corrected. The main purpose of doing this is to ensure the safety of the drivers.

It is not clear whether the recalled vehicles have gone on international sale.

What is the situation in Nepal?

BYD’s Dolphin car is also a preferred electric car in the Nepali market. BYD Yuan Plus car has not yet come to the Nepali market.

According to Sushil Tandukar, after sales department head of Cymex Nepal, the official seller of BYD in Nepal, the BYD vehicles arriving in Nepal are right-hand drive and the vehicles recalled in China are left-hand drive.

He said, “Left hand drive and right hand drive have separate ‘manufacturing plants’. Therefore, there is no need for Nepali customers to panic.”

He said recalling the vehicle from the market is good from the point of view of safety. “Recalling the vehicle from the market is not a big problem, these kinds of common problems occur from time to time, keeping in mind the safety of the customers, the company recalls the vehicle for maintenance,” he said.
