England and USA from Group ‘B’ in knockout
Doha: England have entered the last 16 after becoming the group winners and the United States runners-up from FIFA World Cup Group B. Christian Pulisic’s decisive goal in Tuesday night’s game saw the United States defeat Iran 1-0 and advance to the pre-quarterfinals.
Pulisic’s lone goal in the 38th minute proved decisive at the Al Thumama Stadium. The United States has reached the knockout stage with five points after playing a 1-1 draw with Wales in the first game and a goalless draw with England in the second game. The USA will play the Netherlands, the winner of Group ‘A’, for the quarter-final entry.
England beat Wales 3-0 in another match on Tuesday night to reach the last 16 as group winners. England defeated Iran 6-2 in the first match to meet Senegal, the runner-up of Group A in the pre-quarterfinals. England reached the last 16 by adding seven points with a draw against America in the second game and a win in the third game.
Marcus Rashford scored two goals and Phil Foden scored one goal in England’s victory. Group ‘C’ and ‘D’ matches will be played on Wednesday. Under Group D, Tunisia and France and Australia and Denmark will meet at 8:45 pm.
Argentina and Poland and Saudi Arabia and Mexico will play in Group C match at 12:45 pm.
